Hace Calor: Days 7-10

Day 7. Champiñónes rellenos. Stuffed mushrooms. Mérida, Yucatan. I don’t really like mushrooms, but these were amazing. Cheese makes anything good.

Day 8. Mandarinas con chile. Mandarin oranges with chile spice. Mérida, Yucatan.

This is what everyone uses to spice up their fruits:

Day 9. Agua fresca piña y chaya. Pineapple and chaya* juice. Campeche. *Chaya is a local plant with about the same nutritional value as spinach. Yum!

A few days back, when I was in Valladolid, I had an amazing chaya soup. Some days it’s easy to try more than one new food!  Other days, it’s like looking for ice in hell…

Day 10. Sopa de vegetales y apio con crema. Vegetable soup and celery with cream sauce. We found an amazing vegetarian restaurant in Campeche. It reminded me of Herbivore in SF only with better food. It reminded Angelica of Gracias Madre in SF, which would be a closer comparison, without the long wait for a table. Vegetarian fare in Mexico is what I like to call Stuff Gringos Like.
